the internet makes me talk fancy | st. cloud kids photographer

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

The words that come out of my mouth VS the words that come via my fingers are two very different things.  For one thing, when I type, I don’t over-use the word ‘like’.  IRL (mom, that stands for: ‘in real life‘), I like, talk like a minnesota valley girl.   It’s like, the new ‘um’.

The biggest thing I’ve noticed is how elegant I sound when commenting on another photographers work (which, let’s face it…in this business, we like a lot of pats on the back!!).  So, if I see a picture that I love, my comments are as follows, “absolutely breathtaking!”, “truly amazing!”, and my favorite, “simply stunning.”  If I EVER tried to use one of those phrases IRL there would be no way to keep a straight face.  “Korey, this chicken is simply stunning.”  Not gonna happen.

It just made me wonder how the internet managed to change the way I communicate.  Am I a poser?  Would the internet gods (come on, I’m Lutheran, I know there’s no such thing) strike me down if I left a comment that sounds more like the real me?  “That’s like, frickin cool.”  Hmmm, maybe change isn’t all bad.

And now may I present some absolutely breathtaking children…the way they photograph is truly amazing.  I’m not exaggerating…I am they are simply stunning.

See, I told ya they were cute :)

I should buy stock in Target | Montrose, MN baby photography

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

I just spent a very enjoyable hour in Target (until I had to hand over my credit card)…I wanted to purchase a few things for the studio dressing room (hairspray, combs, etc.)…This is the kind of shopping I love.  Product shopping.  Not grocery shopping.  Not (God forbid) swimsuit shopping.  I just spent time in the fun aisles…makeup, shampoo, home storage (not sure why organizational products excite me, it’s not like I’m even remotely organized).  I am all stocked up now.

So, a big thank you to Target…for carrying items I never knew I needed, until they were staring at me from your clean, white shelves.  Random impulse by of the day:  ‘booger swipers’…a specially formulated wipe that gently removes all traces of goop and grime from children’s faces…I’m pretty sure a kleenex would have been good enough, but like I said…I needed it.

We are traveling back a month or two to this little dude’s b-day session…He was reaaally into his cake…hard core.  It was hard to keep my camera in focus, he had us laughing so hard :)

Big brother was lucky enough to get to join into the mess and mayhem…

adventures in london part 4 | buffalo/monticello baby photographer

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

My ramblings will make perfect sense if you start here:

Adventures in London:  Installment 1 , Installment 2 and Installment 3.

I’d love to tell you that our time in London was glamorous and full of non stop excitement…but the truth was, we were too broke to do much of anything.  Yes, we made sure to go out every weekend (hello, college students)…and we did manage to take a few weekend trips (we toured Whales and Scotland), but during the week, we could not afford to travel anywhere but in our own backyard.  The backyard, while quaint and pretty…was really boring.  Our neighborhood was an ideal place to raise a family (I wish I could go back there now and do some photo-shoots on their little roads, so cute!), but it was not ideal for the lifestyle we had hoped for.  About 3 times a week, Krista and I would venture into the nearby video store…rent a VHS tape (2 pounds each…roughly $3.50 u.s.), and bring it back home to watch.  Our family let us use their VCR without complaining (I’m sure they thought we were total losers…but they were polite and left us alone)…and there we would sit and watch our favorite chick flicks.  When we weren’t renting movies…we read romance novels.  I’m telling you~the excitement that went down in our Toy Story themed bedroom was epic.

One of the highlights of our stay was when our boyfriends (now husbands), came to visit for a long weekend.  We took them all around London, to our favorite spots, restaurants, pubs…everywhere!  They were not impressed with the food quality or the outrageous prices of everything (what do you mean a beer is going to cost me $8.00?).  The guys kept saying they couldn’t wait to get ‘back to the real world‘.   We were so happy to see them and spend time with them…but let’s be honest, what we were really excited for was what they brought along with them.  Two GIANT suitcases filled to the brim with goodies.  Books, candy, (cover your ears mom) smokes and mountain dew(yes, they brought us pop~Mountain Dew was not sold where we were living).  Everything a classy college girl could ask for!  After the boys left, I remember Krista and I lying side by side on our matching twin beds…beef jerky and reeses peanut butter cups on the table between us, an open can of mountain dew on my lap and  a stack of new Danielle Steel novels to pour over.  Life was good….at least until our supplies ran out.

Here is my little winner from the ’so you think your kids cute’ contest I ran over a month ago!  I took way too many pictures, but little miss ‘P’ was a born star, and  she wasn’t about to let her moment in the spotlight go quickly!

She got these cute little leggings and headband from mon petit…this is the image I chose to enlarge for their store display!

I’ve been really surprised lately…these cake smash kiddos are lasting longer than I expect them too, and they’re letting us keep shooting after they’ve washed up!!

Little Women.  My 8 yr old daughter just finished reading this book.  I’m actually pretty surprised she read it (it looks a little shorter than I remember, they must make simpler versions)…I don’t think I picked up that book until I was at least in my early teens.  I was very impressed…she even gave me a little review of the books highlights when she was finished (her abridged version boiled down to ‘so there were these 4 March sisters, who were very poor because of the Civil War, they loved each other very much).  Last night I took the kids (minus Brady, I’m not a total glutton for punishment) to the library, where Lucy signed up to get her very own library card.    I had high hopes for the books she would choose to read for her first few weeks of summer vacation.   Would she pick ‘Anne of Green Gables’?  ‘Catcher in the Rye’?  ‘The Great Gatsby’?  Nope, she discovered a thought provoking series of books entitled:  The Olson Twins. I see lots of deep thinking in her future!  Ack, who am I to judge, I used to pour over Sweet Valley High like it was crack.

Big picture share today.  Why?  Because this session involved two of my favorite things.  Cake & Baby.  Baby & Cake.  Both are totally edible, see for yourself!

Wait for it….

Poor little smurf :(

Love these family shots!

That last shot was done AFTER the cake smash.  This is not typical…usually after rolling around in blob of greasy, slimy, delicious fat, we tend to call it a day-but he was still happy-so we grabbed a few more, I’m glad we did!!

the great cereal debate | watertown, mn baby and childrens photography

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

I am not a morning person.  My parents, husband and college roommates can attest to this fact.  In recent years, I have become frighteningly dependant on coffee to make me a more pleasant person in the AM.  My kids are used to my surly demeanor, and have come to accept when I ‘grunt’ a response to their chatter, in lieu of actual words.   Brady knows that I am not firing on all cylinders at 7:30am, and he uses it to his advantage.  He likes to pick his own cereal…and a few months ago, he decided that he wanted to ‘mix’ 2 of his favorite cereals together.  Okay, fine.  I did it, and he was happy.  This continued for a few weeks, and then he asked for 3 cereals to be mixed.  I said, ‘no, two is enough’…he threw a fit, and I gave in.  again.  As you may have guessed, this week he upped the anti to FOUR.  I am now required to mix 4 cereals together for my son for breakfast.  Like I said, I’m not a morning person, and the thought of having to do the whole shouting match/time out/take away privileges deal (he’s the stubbornest child ever, and simply saying ‘no’ does not get results) before I’ve had 2 cups of coffee is not an option.

Do I need super-nanny?  Or is mixing  Honey Bunches, Life, Frosted Mini Wheats and Honey Nut Chex perfectly acceptable behavior?  All I know is that I can never buy more than 4 boxes of cereal again.  I don’t have a bowl big enough to mix 5 cereals.

Well, enough of my poor parenting techniques…are you ready for some cute kiddos?!  These two both did awesome-it was great meeting the whole family!  Can’t wait to do pictures of all 4 of you this summer!

I love how her cake pictures turned out!  And that cake-oh it’s so adorable-Juliet from Divine Cakes out in Paynesville.  She’s worth the drive ;)

Awww, lovin her big brother!

This kid cracked me up!

gurgling brook | buffalo kids photographer

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

Is it wrong to train your children to sleep with the soothing sounds of a gurgling brook in the background?  What kid doesn’t like to listen to a symphony of woodland creatures cricketing and chirping as they drift off to dreamland?  Well, I don’t know if it’s wrong or not…I just know that we would die without these.  Our children (the whole family, really) can not survive without our white noise machines.  When we go to a hotel, we bring TWO, and we put one on each end of the room with the volume cranked up as loud as it will go…when you walk into the room, it sounds like you’re sitting on an airport runway.  And then in the morning, when you turn them off, the silence is so deafening that my ears physically hurt.  But, hey-at least we didn’t hear that dip-wad from room 205 across the hall slam his door forty-seven times in the night.

When we go up north to my in-law’s trailers (vacation spot) during the summer, they just shake their heads when they see us transform the front of their trailer into a virtual ‘bat cave’, complete with room darkening sheets and rolled up towels under the door.  And then we bust out our sound machines…yeah baby…we are gonna sleep like nobody’s business!   I’ve always been a little bit psycho about 2 things.  Sleep (and making sure everyone gets the correct amount), and germs (but who doesn’t wipe off every inch of their shopping cart before they touch it?).  Some moms are so relaxed about those things, and to those moms I say, “really, your children won’t nap?  Have you tried listening to mothers heartbeat?  Or spring rain?”

This was my third session with this little sweetie :)   You can see her 6 month session here (her newborn session is on my old blog…which I can’t access)…She has killer blue eyes…I wish they’d bring her in once a month…but she’s going to have a baby brother to compete with in a few months, so chances are I’ll be seeing her again!

I love the face of this next shot…kind of like a stare-down.

Loving this outfit…it’s a sweater/dress.  Can we call it a ’swess’??

Her mom brought a cake…AND super duper cute cupcakes to use….and the best part-they saved one for me to eat!  I didn’t tell anyone in my family-just horded it away until no one was looking-and then I scarfed it down in two bites.  Then I felt guilty for not sharing.

Highlights from 2010 | minnesota modern portrait photographer

Well, I’m heading out of town today for a long New Years celebration.  This is the only weekend every year when I realize that I do not own a pair of snow-pants…and when the kids inevitably beg me to go sledding with them, I have to put on 4 pairs of sweatpants to survive.  I prefer to wear my bright pink polka dot ‘zumba-esque’ pants over the top of the layers to give it that really ‘finished’ look.

Without getting sappy or sentimental (neither of which I do well), I want to thank all of my clients for being so awesome.  Thank you for trusting me to capture a few of your memories…thank you for being normal (that’s a biggie), decent people who I feel comfortable working with…thank you for bringing me such COOL kids that make my job easy…well, I think that’s enough sap, don’t you?

I have a few more sessions to blog, but I think I’ll save them for next year (HAHAHA, sorry, that line cracks me up e.v.e.r.y. time…what am I, 12?).  Instead, I’d like to share some of my favorite images from the past year.  I shot over 90 sessions this year, and it was so hard to only show a few…I attempted to limit my share to ten favs, but I might have gone over a bit…

Oh, and just an FYI…session fee’s will be going up a wee bit in 2011, not like crazy-high…but probably about $20 more or so…if you’d like to book your session now & get the 2010 rates (even if you don’t plan on taking the pictures until July), you can go ahead and do it!  This offer is only good until I get my butt in gear and re-work my website and shopping cart area!   Operators are standing by.

Here we go:

Connor turns ONE | buffalo, mn first birthday photographer

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Why do we bother keeping mountains of toys in our house…when the only things my kids play with are cardboard boxes, popsicle sticks, string and their blankets?  My kids have been playing outside in a giant cardboard box (just got a huge beanbag for newborns-whoop!!) for the past hour…the way they hooped and hollered, you would have thought I just said we were heading to Disney World.  Whatever floats your boat.

Here’s my nephew Connor-all smiles and personality this time around.  Typically, he just gives me his usual smirk…but suddenly he was all kinds of charming…not to mention busy!  I’ll just share the cute ’sitting still shots’, because I’m afraid his running away shots might be a bit on the blurry side ;)

p.s.  Hey Connor, your mom said you ate cake ‘like a girl’  (she may have used the word ‘dainty’)…but I’m a girl, and I eat cake like, well, whatever the opposite of ‘dainty’ is, I suppose.

p.p.s.  Don’t you love the ‘jean diaper’???  Such a cool thing for boy cake smashes-don’t ya think?
