wrinkles | monticello, mn kids photography

Friday, June 10th, 2011

I noticed something today.  My face is starting to ‘hold a wrinkle’.  You know, when you sleep on the side of your face, and then 2 hours later, that same squished pillow crease wrinkle thing is STILL there?!!   This can not be a good sign.  I had my birthday last week, and I’m definitely starting to ‘feel’ my age (which we all know is 29…plus a few).

Signs I’m getting older:

*  I’m proudly wearing black pants with a navy shirt.  We all know this is a fashion disaster, but I’m past the age of caring.

*  I can’t go out in public without at least putting on some blush, coverup and mascara…my face is starting to fall (and do the weird wrinkle crap, so every little thing helps!!)

*  Last week I had a strong impulse to buy a tablecloth.  I know, right??

*  I tear up when I order a drink, and the server actually asks to see my ID…”Of course you can, you sweet thing!”

*  I stopped watching MTV.

*  I twisted my ankle trying to dance…it wasn’t even a fancy move…just your basic roger rabbit.

*  Yes, I did say roger rabbit, because I’m old, and those are the dance moves I learned back in the day.  I can also do a mean shopping cart.

Missed putting a few of the spring mini’s up on the blog~so here ya go!

children of the corn? buffalo, mn kids photographer

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

I’ve never actually seen the movie children of the corn…but I always envision haunted looking children appearing from the middle of a field with a glazed over look in their eyes.  Last night, my kids did their own little re-enactment.  If you remember, last night was HOT.  I was driving home from the store, and on my way up the driveway, a flash of pink caught my eye.  It was Lucy…wandering out in the middle of our field, wielding a baton as she fought the tall grass.  I drove a little further up the driveway, and suddenly Riley appeared, shirtless and flushed, staring at me as I drove slowly by.  I got out of the car and heard a faint, ‘mommy’!  I looked waaaaay down into another field…and a little blonde head appeared…as Brady made his way through the tall grasses….I could see the same glazed look in his eyes.  He was wearing a long sleeve shirt, knee-high boots, and no pants.  I think the heat was getting to my children.  I was slightly concerned….both for the heat-induced glaze in their eyes, and their random state of undress.  After a thorough tick-check and a good scrubbing, I could see my children slowly returning to their normal selves.  Phew.  Did anyone else react strangely to the heat blast?  My poor dog got sick because of it.  I’m all about heat and summer, but it was such a drastic jump!  Anyhoo…

Here’s some more from the spring mini’s!

not fair | buffalo, mn kids photographer

Friday, May 6th, 2011

What’s not fair tonight:

~the fact that I went out to a Mexican restaurant tonight with the Klatt family to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, while everyone (the staff) who actually had a valid reason to celebrate such an occasion was busy serving us…

~the fact that I ordered a margarita and didn’t realize that a ‘large’ drink meant alcohol served in a glass bigger than my head…which I then felt guilted into drinking in its entirety (wasting liquor in my family is frowned upon), which in turn made editing pictures very difficult tonight.

~the fact that I have a job in which I CAN drink while working…without the slightest risk of being fired…no worries, I only drink during blog posts…not actual sessions.

~the fact that I ordered a taco salad (in a pathetic attempt to be slightly healthier than the other menu choices)…and yet it consisted of a deep fried shell/bowl filled with 5 inches of re-fried beans and a few shreds of lettuce.

~the fact that I really wanted Brady to be potty-trained, but then regretted it tonight when he made me take him to the bathroom 3 times during supper…can’t we just put a diaper back on?  Mommy’s drinking her margarita in a bucket!!!

~the fact that tonight’s episode of Grey’s anatomy did not include a musical interlude in the midst of surgery….just kidding, did ya’ll see that episode a few weeks back…scary stuff.

Okay, no more whining about what’s fair or not…let’s get to some eye candy.  Here’s a few from my day of mini-sessions awhile back…

This is my 3rd time taking pictures of this little cutie-he was a little nervous at first (always a bit nervewracking for ME when it’s only a 20 minute session), but as you can see, it didn’t take him long to snap out of it!

Gosh, she was cute :)

Deep thinker…or treasure hunter?

Ugh, these 2 were so sweet together!

I’ll have some more mini’s up soon!

I realize that bunnies and chicks are a popular addition to spring mini sessions at many photography studios…I however, am not one of those studios.  Why?  Because bunnies smell.  And they poop & pee…a LOT.  And they scratch and kick, and sometimes bite.  Not to mention, 1/2 the kids are so scared of the dang bunnies, you spend most of your session trying to convince a 2 year old that the bunny LOVES them…when all the bunny really wants is to is gnaw it’s way out of the stupid pink basket you put him in, and get the heck out of there!  Wow, I guess I have a little pent-up hostility towards bunnies.  That’s what 9 years of bunny season will do to a gal…just watch, next year I’ll have a flippin lamb in the studio BWAHHAHAH!!

the mini…final installment | monticello family photography

This morning at the breakfast table,  Lucy (8), was explaining the ‘ageing process’ to Riley (5).  She said, “well, mommy’s in the middle, since she’s 32…when you get to be in the forties, you’re getting old…and when you’re in your fifties your just old.”  (she stopped at 50, so apparently, there is no life after 50).  Then Riley asked, “but Mommy wants to be 29, is that old?”  Lucy said, “well, Mommy is NEVER going to be that young again…the twenties are still young, and she’s not.”   Thank you for that uplifting speech Lucy…you really made my day!

Here’s the last picture share from my day of mini’s!

These kids were hilarious-and obviously, excited to have their pictures taken ;)

Well, some folks think I’m funny…and some just bury their face and cry.

Most kids won’t sit and hug like this-love it!

I love how a bit of sun-flare makes such a cool difference in a photo…

How cute are these three?

This mini-session had to be rescheduled, so we did them in my backyard…It was so pretty that day.  And now, it’s brown and dead :(

I leave you with this gorgeous photo…I envision at 20×30 canvas enlargement for over the fireplace??

mini sessions, 3rd installment | monticello family and pet photographer

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Here’s a few more families from the day of mini-sessions.  I’ve been asked a few times if I’ll do these ‘mini-session’ days again…and the answer is yes!   I am really hoping to do a day of mini-sessions in the spring.  Finger’s crossed, my studio space will be complete for those, since it will be cold and ugly outside in March (which is when I’m tentatively planning them), and we will need to be indoors.  The spring mini’s will be geared towards children only…and the fall ones will be geared towards families again.  Please don’t ask if I plan on having bunnies for the spring sessions…the answer is, “only if you plan on coming and cleaning the cage every day!”  Otherwise, it will be a bunny and chick free zone.    Okay, we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves here…but since we’re discussing animals…I’d like to introduce you to a little pupper named DAZZLE.  How can you not say the name dazzle and just smile?  I’m smiling right now  :)

The adorable ‘R’ family…the kiddo’s fell asleep on their way out to see me, and mom and dad had to give them some fruit snacks to pep them up…this incidentally turned their tongues blue…which made for a couple of interesting photo-shop challenges!!

And the ‘B’ fam…what up, folks?  A little birdie told me (okay, it was on facebook) that dad was none too pleased that we had to reschedule mini’s for Sunday (during the Viking’s game)…although he never once complained to me!!

A few more mini’s | monticello family photographer

Sunday, October 10th, 2010

Allrighty…and the summer weather continues.  I wish it would do this every year.  I like the concept of the fall colors and the summer heat.  I wonder if it’s messing with my dad’s fall fishing extravaganza?  Fall fishing is his favorite…in fact when I managed to give birth to not one, but TWO of my kids in the beginning of October, he was actually a bit put out!  Sorry dad.

Here are a few families from my mini sessions a few weeks back.  This was before the heat wave, and right after the never-ending rain.  A perfect fall day, crisp and sunny!  My goal is to get all mini sessions completely edited and the gallery’s up no later than this coming Friday-okay mini-folks?

And another adorable family….everyone came looking so stylish for the mini’s…I was very impressed with all the coordinating!

This morning I was dropping Riley off at preschool, and when I got back in the mom-mobile, I heard a strange thump in the back.  Since I love all those gruesome shows (criminal minds, csi, law&order svu, etc) my immediate thought was that someone was in the back seat with a butcher knife, lying in wait.  My second thought was, it’s a little early in the morning for ax murderers, so I just drove home.

During my drive, my mind wandered back 15 years (aren’t I too young to have flashbacks?)…cue the dream sequence.  I was sixteen years old, and I had just finished my shift at SportMart (girls, this is a good place to meet lots of nice young men…of course, I have no personal experience with this, as I was dating Korey at the time).  I walked to the parking lot, and hopped in my mom-mobile (you heard it right, I’ve driven a mini-van since I was 16 yrs old), cranked up the tunes, and headed for home.  During the drive I heard some thumping and bumping as I raced through town, but I figured my parents must have left something in the back seat.  I got home, pulled into the garage, and turned off the car.   The silence was a stark contrast to the loud music I had been singing along to.  As I gathered my things, a voice shouted, “Hi KEL!” and a head popped up from the backseat.   Holy Heart-attack Batman.  My super awesome boyfriend (can you believe I married this guy?) had been hiding in the back of the van the entire drive, just waiting to scare the crap out of me.  As it was, I probably had to change my pants (I’ve blocked some of that night from my memory).  His buddies were in the street, laughing hysterically…apparently they had been following with his car the entire drive as well.  After the initial scare wore off, I was mostly embarassed.  My singing was probably not the best…and what if I had been doing something really embarassing, that I didn’t want him to know about?  Like picking my nose, and flinging boogers in the backseat (could happen), or having an encouraging pep-talk with myself,“kelly, you’re good enough.  smart enough.  and goll darn-it-people like you.”  I learned a valuable lesson that night…always check the back of the car before you begin driving, and never let your boyfriend make a copy of your key, it’s just asking for trouble.

All right, I just had to get all of that out of my system, since I haven’t written a blog post in over a week.  I kind of missed it, it’s like therapy.  2 weeks ago I had mini-sessions, and of course, it rained on the day we were supposed to do them.  I ended up rescheduling everyone to Sunday, and with the exception of a few people, it worked out really well (and we had a gorgeous day, much like this one!!).  There were 2 back to back sessions that were not able to come on Sunday, so they came to my house on Saturday afternoon, and the weather cooperated with us-thank goodness.  These families are my husband’s cousins-who were just in town for the weekend before heading back to Washington DC and Wisconsin.

cousins!

I had to show this next one too…love the sun!

This little sweetie is only 2 months…she did get her head up by herself for a minute, but it was pretty exhausting ;)

This family is so amazing…they’ve had one heck of a year…their mommy underwent a little thing called brain surgery.  You are doing so awesome Amber-and your family looks so happy together.  I don’t know if I could have survived what you went through-God gave you an amazing amount of strength :)

Seriously, this dude is the same exact age as my Brady (2 1/2), but he would NEVER strike a pose like this-love it!

This might be my favorite from the day-work it baby!
