Everyone puts their pants on one leg at a time | minneapolis newborn photography

But what about your bra?  Do you have long monkey arms that can reach behind and easily clamp your bra into place?  Or are you more of a buckle in the front, and twist it around to the back type of gal?  I personally have always done ‘the twist’…but have vivid memories of  friends teasing me about it.  Apparently only ‘grade schooler’s’ put their bra’s on like that.  Great, so I get dressed like a 12 year old…just add it to my list of awkward quirks.  Have you ever watched a TV show or a movie where a woman is getting dressed (I must be watching cable)?  Does she twist and wiggle her way into her skivvies?  NO!  Honestly, I always figured if men (my hubs not included) could get a bra off with one hand, I should certainly be able to put it ON with two.  But no…when I must dress in public (like the gym), I drape a towel over my shoulders so that random strangers won’t burst into peels of laughter at my immature dressing techniques.  The reason I am bringing this up, is because I went to a ‘bra party’ (it’s like a Tupperware party for your boobs), and I was talking with the other guests (who were all rather well-endowed, such as myself), and guess what?  They ALL do the twist too!  The cloud of humiliation has been lifted!  I feel like stripping in the streets.  Wait, no…there’s more than one reason why I dress underneath a towel.  Cancel stripping in the streets.  But I am thankful that I have forged a comradery with other woman.   Big chested, uncoordinated women UNITE!

Annnnd, we’re back.  Enough about my undergarments…let’s talk baby girls!   I know the mommy of this little princess, we went to the same small high school~it was so good to re-connect with her!  Congratulations on your little one, she is perfection!

Hello eye contact!  When she was awake, she meant business~so alert!!  I love this shot :)

Ringing in the new year with Dick | Minnetrista, MN

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Okay, this is probably really bad to admit…but the highlight of New Years Eve for the past few years, has been watching Dick Clark come back from the dead.  I know it’s immature to laugh at an old man wearing gross amounts of makeup….and I do applaud his comeback after a stroke….but maybe he should have just left TV land gracefully?   Ack, who am I too judge…Lord knows I’m not getting any younger or prettier, and even with a stroke he’s a more eloquent speaker than I am…

Well, I am off to clean out the studio today…going to be selling some backgrounds and props.  I’m usually really good at purging.  Once I decide to clean, into the trash it goes…but props are different…I mean, who KNOWS what kind of shoots will come up in the future?

I thought it best to start out the New Year with a fresh new baby (even though his 6 month session is right around the corner!!)…This whole family is so adorable….I can not WAIT to see them again!

Sweet little boys…not all siblings are this kind to their new baby brother’s!

My favs of 2011~Minneapolis, MN baby, family and senior photographer

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

This year has been pretty darn excellent.   I am slowly but surely working on refining my business into what I want it to be…when I first started a few years ago my goals were wishy-washy at best.  I knew that I had to make a certain amount of money a month so that I didn’t have to work at the Target Deli e.v.e.r. again.  Now that I feel confident that I never have to slice roast beef again, I can move on to different goals!

Some plans for 2012:

*Specialize more.  My focus will be solely on newborns/kids/families/high school seniors.

*No more weddings.  I LOVE photographing weddings, I just don’t LOVE everything that goes along with it…the planning, the stress, the huge amount of editing, the loss of valuable weekends with family!  Not to mention, there are SO many amazing wedding photographers in Minnesota already, why not leave all the bridezilla drama to them? (I’ve never actually dealt w/ a bridezilla…but surely my luck would have run out sooner or later).

*No more extended family sessions.  Basically, my reasoning for this are the same reasons I don’t do weddings any more (see excuses listed above!).

*Decide if hiring a very PT employee is beneficial, or if it will be a big headache (this is what Korey thinks…but he lovingly fights me on every big decision I make!).

*Become more known in my community…especially for high school seniors portraits.

*Begin entering image competitions…Also begin working on becoming certified or accredited…but first figure out which word it is; certified or accredited.  Is accredited even a word?

*Fit into the jeans I wore in 10th grade.  Okay, lady…now you go too far.

Here are some of my very favorite pictures from the past year.  I really tried to keep it to 10, since I love a good top 10 list.  But the numbers kept growing, and I had to stop looking at every-one’s files.  So here are the top 20 (in my humble opinion).

Have a wonderful New Years Eve~I’ll see ya on the flip side :)

The coolest kids of 2011~Minnesota Newborn Photographer

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again….I have the best job.  I was lucky enough to photograph all of these beautiful babies in 2011.  I hope to do even more newborn sessions in 2012.  I think I’ve been rather ’scroogy’ lately with my lack of specials and deals, so I am offering expecting parents a newborn special for the next 3 days!  Any newborn sessions or baby plan that is booked before the clock strikes midnight on New Years Eve (just to be clear, offer ends @ midnight on 12/31/2011), will receive a $75 towards a print or digital collection of their choice.

The Fine Print:

*The session fee must be paid at time of booking.  Newborn session fees are $130 and do not include any prints or products.

*The $75 will go towards a collection, not a la carte items.

*Even if you just found out you are pregnant, you can still book this deal.  I will see you in the fall!!

*I have limited session times in late February, so please contact me ASAP to see if I can fit you in.

*Newborn sessions are photographed at my cozy warm studio in Buffalo within the baby’s first 4 to 10 days of life…for more session details click HERE , choose ‘website‘, click ‘details’, click ‘newborn session tips‘.

*You can choose either a regular newborn session, or one of my baby plans.  The first few pages of my price guide explain the different baby plans, as well as the different collection options.

*To book, please EMAIL ME:  kelly@photographybykellyklatt.com  I will walk you through the reservation process.

I can’t wait to meet all the new babers…I’m sure they’ll be just as cool as the last group ;)

not your typical guys weekend | minneapolis, MN newborn photographer

Monday, November 14th, 2011

This past weekend my husband Korey went up north for a ‘guys weekend’.  I assumed ‘guys’ weekend would be similar to my ‘girls weekend’.  Our girls weekends consist of beer, cards, food and visits to the bar.  As we’ve grown older, the food to beer ratio has tipped in favor of good food…we still try and party like it’s 1999, but our bedtime has gotten a little earlier as the years get on.  Sometimes I think my girlfriends are so manly it’s un-natural.  I once tried to be sneaky and take the gals to a craft fair.  It didn’t go over so well…three of them refused to get out of my van.  I mean, who doesn’t like a good craft fair?  They have fresh kettle corn for goodness sake.

Here are a few highlights of my husband’s notsomanly adventure with his 3 buddies.

* Winery Tour…No joke, they did this.

*Walk through the woods.  (this did not involve a rifle and a deer stand, it was simply a stroll).

*Shopping in Walker.

*A visit to the headwaters of the Mississippi….and a scenic driving tour along the border of Canada.

*Appetizers at the nice restaurant in town.

*Chippendales Show.  The guys went to the casino and surprise, surprise, the chippendales were in town!  They claim they didn’t know anything about it…I’m not so sure.

*Coffee in bed.  This one is my favorite…I said, “Kor, why don’t you ever bring ME coffee in bed?”  He said he would but I would probably bite his head off for waking me up.  True.  true.

All in all, it sounds like they had a real cozy weekend.  I get to have a mini-girls weekend with my sister-in-laws this weekend.  The theme will be TWILIGHT.  I’m excited!

Another sweet little newborn on the blog today!  This chick was a fighter!!  She was not a fan of sleeping and fought to keep her peepers open the entire afternoon!  So the sweet, sleeping pictures that we did get I consider a total victory!!

princess!!

This is the view I saw the most…This face speaks to me…it says, ‘don’t mess with me’.

I love the feel of this last one, so pretty!

twofer | delano, mn newborn photography

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Today you are in for a special treat…a newborn session twofer.  I’m not gonna lie, the thought of photographing newborn twins intimidates me.  So I called up a good photographer friend and she came over and assisted for the afternoon.  I was in heaven!  Having someone there who knows what I want without me having to explain~oh, it’s a beautiful thing!  I think this twin session was done in less than 90 minutes!

Someday, (when I can look at my books and determine that hiring an associate is a good idea) I’m going to find me a fabulous newborn partner…preferably someone who sweats as much as I do (can’t have her looking better than me), it would also be nice to find someone who isn’t going to open up shop next door a few months down the road :)   Before I go hiring that dream newborn assistant, I will probably hire someone to do my in-person ordering…so any past clients of mine that are looking for a little side job…I might just be looking you up!  Or else I’ll just troll Craigs List ;)

So, back to these two…like I said, dream babies!  And their parents were so calm and natural, I was very impressed!  These were taken a few months ago, and I know they’ve grown a ton since this day (facebook keeps me in the loop).  Can’t wait for their 6 month session!

separated at birth | Maple Grove newborn photographer

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Does anyone else remember being obsessed with the ‘Sweet Valley Twins/Sweet Valley High’ series?  I wanted to be spunky Jessica Wakefield in a bad way.  5 ft 6 inches of blonde perfection, complete with beautiful blue-green eyes, a trim size 6 body, and a matching sister to boot.  Those books were like a crack addiction for 10 yr olds.  And now my daughter Lucy has started reading them.  What happened to Little Woman?  I don’t mind her reading ‘the babysitter club’ (another fav from my youth)…I mean those girls were entrepreneurs.  Even Nancy Drew had some type of skill set…something that doesn’t revolve around being the most popular, beautiful girls in school.   I wonder if she will develop a complex about her looks…I also wonder if I will ever find my long lost identical twin sister (come on mom…after all these years…you can tell me the truth.  Where is she?  Is she a size 6?).

Yay!  More newborn goodness heading your way…this little girl was teeny-tiny (born 6 weeks early)…I love preemies…not only because I had one (who is now  34 lbs of beefy goodness), but because they sleep SO well for the session…Would it be totally over the line to request that all of my pregnant clients ask to be induced just a few weeks early?  I can just see the look on the Doctor’s face, “But doctor, I’m already 36 weeks, and if I go much longer, my newborn session is going to be a total disaster!!”

I love this last one…so soft and pretty :)

love my job | hutchinson, mn newborn photography

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

I love my job.  Let me just say that out loud.  Love.  It.  Even when my brother says, “whatever Kelly, you don’t really work”.  Or when I sit on my computer chair for days at a time and I complain to Korey that my back hurts, and he has zero sympathy, because he actually lifts things at work, and has a legitimate  reason for pain.  Or when I sit at that same chair, and can actually feel my butt growing larger.  Like growing pains…only sideways.   I love it…even when the pile of sessions that need to be edited has me running for the pantry to the bag of chocolate chips (by the way, Korey has already hidden the halloween candy from me, per my request)…or to the bottle of captain for a little rum and coke fix.  Still all good…because that means that I am running a business.  The wheels are turning…even though I am sometimes shocked that this job has turned into a career.  Me, the girl who still can’t balance her own checkbook (duh, that’s why we have credit cards…and husbands).

The very best part of this job is that I get to photograph some of the cutest kids around.  I don’t have to put out a casting call for cuteness, it just walks through the door…looking like this:

New little brother was s.t.u.b.b.o.r.n.  I got a few shots of him sleeping peacefully, but he was out for maybe 6 minutes…not a fan of sleeping, this one :)

This family shot with the baby screaming…he looks so mad…I think he’s even flicking me off…the mom just smiling through it~she’s a pro!

This little cutie didn’t want pictures of herself when they all came in for maternity pictures…but this time around, she was all over it!

The big sisters trying out some of my new headbands, very angelic :)
