My favs of 2011~Minneapolis, MN baby, family and senior photographer

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

This year has been pretty darn excellent.   I am slowly but surely working on refining my business into what I want it to be…when I first started a few years ago my goals were wishy-washy at best.  I knew that I had to make a certain amount of money a month so that I didn’t have to work at the Target Deli e.v.e.r. again.  Now that I feel confident that I never have to slice roast beef again, I can move on to different goals!

Some plans for 2012:

*Specialize more.  My focus will be solely on newborns/kids/families/high school seniors.

*No more weddings.  I LOVE photographing weddings, I just don’t LOVE everything that goes along with it…the planning, the stress, the huge amount of editing, the loss of valuable weekends with family!  Not to mention, there are SO many amazing wedding photographers in Minnesota already, why not leave all the bridezilla drama to them? (I’ve never actually dealt w/ a bridezilla…but surely my luck would have run out sooner or later).

*No more extended family sessions.  Basically, my reasoning for this are the same reasons I don’t do weddings any more (see excuses listed above!).

*Decide if hiring a very PT employee is beneficial, or if it will be a big headache (this is what Korey thinks…but he lovingly fights me on every big decision I make!).

*Become more known in my community…especially for high school seniors portraits.

*Begin entering image competitions…Also begin working on becoming certified or accredited…but first figure out which word it is; certified or accredited.  Is accredited even a word?

*Fit into the jeans I wore in 10th grade.  Okay, lady…now you go too far.

Here are some of my very favorite pictures from the past year.  I really tried to keep it to 10, since I love a good top 10 list.  But the numbers kept growing, and I had to stop looking at every-one’s files.  So here are the top 20 (in my humble opinion).

Have a wonderful New Years Eve~I’ll see ya on the flip side :)

The coolest kids of 2011~Minnesota Newborn Photographer

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again….I have the best job.  I was lucky enough to photograph all of these beautiful babies in 2011.  I hope to do even more newborn sessions in 2012.  I think I’ve been rather ’scroogy’ lately with my lack of specials and deals, so I am offering expecting parents a newborn special for the next 3 days!  Any newborn sessions or baby plan that is booked before the clock strikes midnight on New Years Eve (just to be clear, offer ends @ midnight on 12/31/2011), will receive a $75 towards a print or digital collection of their choice.

The Fine Print:

*The session fee must be paid at time of booking.  Newborn session fees are $130 and do not include any prints or products.

*The $75 will go towards a collection, not a la carte items.

*Even if you just found out you are pregnant, you can still book this deal.  I will see you in the fall!!

*I have limited session times in late February, so please contact me ASAP to see if I can fit you in.

*Newborn sessions are photographed at my cozy warm studio in Buffalo within the baby’s first 4 to 10 days of life…for more session details click HERE , choose ‘website‘, click ‘details’, click ‘newborn session tips‘.

*You can choose either a regular newborn session, or one of my baby plans.  The first few pages of my price guide explain the different baby plans, as well as the different collection options.

*To book, please EMAIL ME:  kelly@photographybykellyklatt.com  I will walk you through the reservation process.

I can’t wait to meet all the new babers…I’m sure they’ll be just as cool as the last group ;)

Today you are in for a special treat…a newborn session twofer.  I’m not gonna lie, the thought of photographing newborn twins intimidates me.  So I called up a good photographer friend and she came over and assisted for the afternoon.  I was in heaven!  Having someone there who knows what I want without me having to explain~oh, it’s a beautiful thing!  I think this twin session was done in less than 90 minutes!

Someday, (when I can look at my books and determine that hiring an associate is a good idea) I’m going to find me a fabulous newborn partner…preferably someone who sweats as much as I do (can’t have her looking better than me), it would also be nice to find someone who isn’t going to open up shop next door a few months down the road :)   Before I go hiring that dream newborn assistant, I will probably hire someone to do my in-person ordering…so any past clients of mine that are looking for a little side job…I might just be looking you up!  Or else I’ll just troll Craigs List ;)

So, back to these two…like I said, dream babies!  And their parents were so calm and natural, I was very impressed!  These were taken a few months ago, and I know they’ve grown a ton since this day (facebook keeps me in the loop).  Can’t wait for their 6 month session!

b-day party fail | buffalo & monticello, mn newborn photography

Monday, March 21st, 2011

I’m not always the brightest bulb…some might even say I’m a few fries short of a happymeal…but this weekend bordered on sheer stupidity.  I invited our entire family to Chucky freakin Cheese for Brady’s 3rd birthday….on a Saturday….without a reservation.  Yeah.  I’m sure you can see where this is heading.  18 people + 5 bags of gifts + 1 Thomas the Train Cake + NOWHERE TO SIT AND OPEN THOSE PRESENTS AND THAT CAKE = birthday party fail.  In my defense…I did call several days before, and they told me that if I came early enough I should be able to get a table (but they don’t take reservations).

Thankfully, we quickly rebounded with a new (and some would say improved) b-day plan.  We let the kids burn through $5 million dollars in tokens for an hour…then headed to Old Country Buffet (yes, we were trading one germ-infested restaurant for another, I see the irony) where we were able to all sit together, get our food on, and open presents.  By the time we were ready for cake, everyone was so full that it was suggested we NOT cut into Brady’s train cake.  So, we grabbed a cup-cake off the buffet line, slapped a lit match in it (hey-the day didn’t get any smoother, I forgot candles too), and sang real fast so his cupcake wouldn’t melt and/or explode.

Thankfully,  3 year old’s are still a bit clueless…all Brady knew was that he was going to go on ‘rides’ (check), open presents (check) and eat cake (sort of check).  All in all, he was a happy little camper!

Speaking of happy campers…this little guy was awesome…so content and peaceful…at 9 days old, he was the perfect little model!!

Bits & Pieces…

Quick little awake time-thanks for the fab eye-contact little buddy!

Annnnd…goodnight.

I love this last shot…mom and dad ordered a gorgeous 16×20 float wrap for their home, it’s gonna look gooood ;)

Well, I’m heading out of town today for a long New Years celebration.  This is the only weekend every year when I realize that I do not own a pair of snow-pants…and when the kids inevitably beg me to go sledding with them, I have to put on 4 pairs of sweatpants to survive.  I prefer to wear my bright pink polka dot ‘zumba-esque’ pants over the top of the layers to give it that really ‘finished’ look.

Without getting sappy or sentimental (neither of which I do well), I want to thank all of my clients for being so awesome.  Thank you for trusting me to capture a few of your memories…thank you for being normal (that’s a biggie), decent people who I feel comfortable working with…thank you for bringing me such COOL kids that make my job easy…well, I think that’s enough sap, don’t you?

I have a few more sessions to blog, but I think I’ll save them for next year (HAHAHA, sorry, that line cracks me up e.v.e.r.y. time…what am I, 12?).  Instead, I’d like to share some of my favorite images from the past year.  I shot over 90 sessions this year, and it was so hard to only show a few…I attempted to limit my share to ten favs, but I might have gone over a bit…

Oh, and just an FYI…session fee’s will be going up a wee bit in 2011, not like crazy-high…but probably about $20 more or so…if you’d like to book your session now & get the 2010 rates (even if you don’t plan on taking the pictures until July), you can go ahead and do it!  This offer is only good until I get my butt in gear and re-work my website and shopping cart area!   Operators are standing by.

Here we go:

You know the phrase, “don’t make me pull this car over?”.  I’m sure your dad used it on you back in the day…maybe you try it on your own kids now.  Well, occassionally I like to throw that phrase out there myself.  Today was one of those days.  I picked up Brady (2 1/2) from daycare.  He’s still adjusting to that routine…and I think he’s trying to make me feel guilty by being especially devilish whenever I pick him up!

We were driving along, and we passed by a park.  He started screaming, “PARK!”  “P-A-R-R-R-R-R-K!!!” at the top of his lungs.  I calmly told him, “nope, not today, we have to go home and make supper”.  As you can imagine, he didn’t care for my answer, and continued to scream at an ear splitting level that was so piercing and shrill, it almost reached a frequency that only dogs can hear.  I turned up the radio and pretended to ignore him.  After a few miles, I couldn’t stand it.  I threw out my token phrase, “do you want me to pull this car over?”  He screamed, “YES!” well, what am I supposed to do, ignore that?  So, I pulled over.  I unbuckled him from the car and took him kicking and screaming to the side of the road and set him down (we’re talking deserted country road, not Hwy 394-don’t judge!).  I got back in the car and pulled forward a few feet.  Nothing.  He stopped screaming and just stared stubbornly at me.  I drove a few more feet.  Still sitting.  Well, now what’s a parent to do?  He’s obviously not understanding that he lost the battle, and he’s looking pretty pleased with himself.  I waited a minute longer…but eventually I saw a car in the distance so I went and got him.  Of course he started the tantrum right back up again.  I’m sure I looked like an unfit parent as I attempted to buckle my thrashing 2 yr old into his car seat, meanwhile that car in the distance drew nearer and crept by, watching my struggle.

So he won.  My 2 year old bested me at my own game.   Never again can I use the phrase, “don’t make me pull this car over!”, because it won’t work…he knows I won’t just drive away and leave him.  When he’s 15, that’s another story!

Here’s my latest baby boy.  There are going to be a LOT of newborn boys on the blog in the next month or so…is there something in the water?  This little guy gave his parents a few scares midway through the pregnancy (contractions and stuff), and mom had to go on bedrest for awhile.  He waited until 37 weeks, and then said that was enough, he was ready to meet the world!

Congratulations on your sweet little boy…I can’t wait to watch him grow!   I’m sure he’ll be much better behaved than my own brood.  But if,  in a few years you’re driving down the road and Mr. E starts to scream bloody murder, just remember that following through on your threats is not always a good idea!

This one with dad is my favorite!!

You might remember this gorgeous mama from her maternity session…

Look at his cute little flaky feet in the shot above.  His mom called me the day before in a bit of a panic…she said, “HE’S MOULTING!  His skin is all falling off!”  Maybe he spent too much time tanning under those ‘billy lights’??  Just kidding, it’s totally normal.

If photographers had a bucket list…I’m pretty sure that photographing newborn twins would be somewhere on it….so CHECK that off my list!!!  I couldn’t seem to land any on my own, so I put a little ‘twins wanted ad’ in my newsletter a few weeks ago, and within one day, I had these two little cuties lined up!   They were born at 31 weeks… and they came to my studio at 40 weeks, both wearing  monitors to watch for apnea spells, but we were able to take them off, and they did splendidly!  No apnea spells, no crying…and bonus-no peeing or pooping on anything ;)   Thanks for coming out you guys, I love the shots we got!

*Special thanks to Angela Elle photography for borrowing me these cute little brown and purple hats-she let me borrow them before she even got a chance to use them!
