  • Welcome! My name is Kelly, and I'm a modern portrait photographer located 45 minutes NW of Minneapolis. I hate to brag, but I might have the best job in the world (obviously, Ben & Jerry's taste-testers will win that award all day long). But still, photography is a close second. Here are a few JOB HIGHLIGHTS: **I get my newborn fix…hold the baby…love the baby…give the baby back. **Making insecure women (all of us, right?) feel comfortable and look amazing. **Talking to high school seniors like I’m still seventeen…then I go and blow the 'cool factor' when I pull up in my mini-van with 3 car-seats. **Impressing frazzled parents by capturing cute (and ‘in focus’) pictures of their crazy 2 year old…who knew working at Proex years ago would give me such a nice skill set? **Writing on my blog…since I work from home, I have no co-workers…sigh, no one to share my random, inane and often obnoxious thoughts with on a regular basis. And so I come here, to the blog, and let everything hang out…you’ve been warned.

Valentine Mini Sessions | Buffalo, MN Childrens’ Photography

I’m trying something new this winter–Valentine Mini Sessions.  I get so many requests for mini’s, I’ve decided to offer a few more ‘mini-options’ this year.  Starting with Valentine’s Day!  These short sessions are perfect for a cute & quick updated portrait of the kiddos…or maybe a nice way to get portraits of your baby during those in-between months (like 3 months and 9 months).  I do a little session of my kids every February and make them custom Valentine’s cards for school~the kids (and teachers) love them!

These are short time slots, which is why I am only allowing one or two kids in a session…if you have more than 2 kids, I need you to book 2 back to back sessions.  The custom valentine cards are adorable 3×3 press printed cards (images on front and back) that are perfect for handing out at school or giving to family and friends.  I’ll have examples on hand when you come in for your mini session.  To reserve your time slot, email me:  kelly@photographybykellyklatt.com.  I will then send you a link to the shopping cart.  You will be paying $125 (+ tax) to reserve your time slot.  This is a non-refundable retainer.  If you choose to get the ‘hug or hump’ collection, you will pay the difference on the day of your mini session!  Yes, I named one of the collections ‘hump’.  I wasn’t going to mention it…but it’s like the elephant in the room.

**I will have a few cute ‘valentine-ish’ sets/props to use…nothing too cheesy…I think these are going to be adorable!

***please note:  these are for children only (3 month to 12 yrs old)…those with newborns, families and seniors will need to book a full session.  Thanks for understanding!

a good year | monticello/buffalo, mn newborn baby photography

It really has been a good year.  God has blessed me with a wonderful family, great friends and good health (except for my big butt…which we really can’t blame God for…if anyone is to blame, it’s Ben & Jerry…those a-holes).

And business-wise, I’ve been extra blessed.  This past spring I added two part time employees and it has made my world so slick.  I love the fact that I don’t work late into the night anymore…plus I’m able to take off every weekend in the summer…if that’s not the best thing ever, I don’t know what is!  It’s also been another year filled with amazing clients.  Seriously, not one wack-job in the whole bunch?  How does a girl get so lucky?  All of my clients are kind and normal (and beautiful, obv)…I honestly feel like I could go out for cocktails or coffee with every single person I’ve worked with this year!  Let’s do it~I’m free in January~hahaha!

I feel like I should throw out some business resolutions out into the universe for 2013~hold myself accountable…

*Organize my schedule into shooting days and editing/business days…maybe only shoot on Tues/Thu/Fri’s?  not sure yet…I would just like to cleanup the way I run my calendar (and my husband would appreciate not turning the heat/air on every day for just one session!).

* Make more money.  What?  I can’t say that?  I’d really like to build a deck this year…maybe make a few extra payments on the mini van…I got needs!  I think this resolution needs to be flushed out a lot more…clients, don’t worry:  prices will stay about the same.

*Become more known in my community.  I’m still working on getting my name out there locally…It doesn’t help that I live in the middle of nowhere.

*A few office type things:  start using USB drives instead of burning CD’s…design welcome packets and actually mail them out to clients after they book a session….update website with new images and fresh content…make my husband build me a few ‘set’ type things I can use for outdoor sessions on my property (this one might not happen).

Well, that’s a good start…I know a lot of these are pretty vague, but at least it’s down on ‘paper’.

Now I get to share my favorite collage of the year~my 2012 NEWBORNS!

 

 

Thanks for trusting me with your precious little babies…I thoroughly enjoy getting my snuggle time with them…and it is such a good feeling to give clients images of their babies that they will never be able to get again.  The newborn stage is only a few weeks long, and I appreciate the effort that these new parents make to get their tiny bundles out to my studio!

Can’t wait to see what 2013 brings~happy new year everyone~see you on the flip side!

A few of my favorite things + grand prize winner announced | Monticello, MN family photography

Here it is…my card for 2012.  My favorite things…in a box.  My kids thought it was pretty cool that they got to bring all their toys into the box for a picture!  And my husband had way too much fun drinking the beer so he could have empty cans as a prop.  Excuse my product shots, it’s hard to show an accordion style card in 2D!

Here’s a few of my favs a bit larger…and yes, I realize that in 90% of the pictures I’m in, my mouth is open so wide you can see my fillings…and seventeen chins.  Sorry, it’s just what I do when the camera comes out!

Kor and I can NOT stop laughing at Brady’s face in the snow shots…he looked like a total gomer in all of them.

This is my family acting like we’re ‘really watching’ a movie.

And this is when the movie comes to a scary part…or something…we’re not known for our acting abilities.

I did NOT forget about the $500 GIVEAWAY~Promise!  In fact, I woke up early this morning excited to see who won (before 7am…that’s insanity on a Saturday morn).  Thank goodness for the ease of random.org…if I had to choose from all those sweet comments~I would be here for days mulling it over.  I am so grateful for so many loyal clients and fans…thanks for sharing on your facebook walls…it was so humbling to see the kind things you said.  I promise this wasn’t a contest just to see if people liked me…I just wanted to do something fun for you guys!  And hey~if I gained a few new followers from it~I won’t complain!

Before I announce the winner~I just wanted to write this out~feel free to ignore my *tiny* soapbox moment here:  I read a lot of comments from people saying that they either haven’t had family portraits done in years…or that they’ve never had them done…and that is such a bummer!  Life is so ___fill in the blank (short, precious, fragile).  I think we’ve all been reminded of that from the recent news coming out of Connecticut.

I’m not saying that having a custom photography experience is going to change your life…but it could!  So here’s what you do:  Every Christmas, you get the same $200 check from Aunt Milly.  You cash that check and hoard it away somewhere safe (you will refuse to just put it in your checking account where it will automatically be spent on diapers and groceries).  Then you tuck away $50 (or a bit more if you’d like a nice wall display!!) every month until June….then you call me and get your butt on the schedule.  This can be your New Years Resolution.  Forget weight loss as your resolution…it’s called photoshop people~hahaha!

Soapbox moment over…you can open your eyes now.

8 days of giveaways | DAY 2 | Fun stuff

Last night was the kiddos sunday school Christmas program…let’s just say…things will be done differently next year.  To start:  Preschool age kids (3 to 5 yr olds) should NOT be front and center on stage the entire time…that’ 45 minutes of pure insanity.

Highlights (read: lowlights) of the Christmas Program:

5.  As the children walked up to the stage, I noticed all the preschoolers were wearing silver halo’s on their heads.  Except Brady.  Even in his young mind, he knows it would be a sacrilege for him to masquerade as an angel.

4.  Being distracted by all the parents (myself included) who were silently mouthing threats and/or encouragement to their kids.  Trying to do the charades version of “get your hand out of your pants” in church is waaay harder than you’d think.

3.  Speaking of hands down your pants…Brady stood up in the middle of the program, grabbed himself and said loudly, “I have to go potty.”  Really?  Maybe you should say it louder…I don’t think the back row heard you.

2.  A random toddler crashed the party…yes, someone let there 2 yr old up on the stage with the rest of the kids…why?  Seriously, there is enough distraction without your kid and his sippy cup stomping up and down the stairs.

1.  The virgin Mary realized about half way into the program that she forgot ‘baby Jesus’ stage left.  She ran and grabbed him by his foot, and carried him dangling to the manger, where she laid him ON his head to rest…it was a doll, no worries.

The holiday rush is almost over…then I can start my own holiday prep.  Lots of orders going out today, and just a few more orders to place…one last session, and it’s done until 2013.  I went to target today and bought all new baking supplies (fresh flour, sugar, etc.)…I haven’t baked since last December, and I can’t imagine that stuff is still good sitting in my cupboard.   I’m taking a day off from the giveaways, and I’ll be back tomorrow with a new one…three more days of good stuff coming your way.

8 days of giveaways | day 4 | monticello, mn photography workshop

HERE IS ALL THE INFO YOU NEED:

 

I had a tough time coming up with a catchy name for this workshop…my first couple of drafts didn’t make the cut:

*Take a picture, it will last longer

*A is for ‘awesome’ not ‘auto’

Finally, I just thought I’d keep it simple…CameraMom….kind of like SoccerMom, but with camera’s and stuff….mini van optional.

So, it’s decided.  You.  Need.  Help.  CameraMom workshop DETAILS:

WHEN: Saturday, February 16th from 10am to 2pm

WHERE:  My studio located in between buffalo and monticello, mn

Please Note:  This class will not be covering any information on starting a photography business, advanced photography skills or photoshop techniques; but rather is focused on the every day photos you take, and the basic concepts of using your camera off of auto-mode.  If you’re looking for education on taking your photography to the next level, this class is not for you.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:

* A 60+ page full color workbook for you to take home, covering all the lessons taught, so that you can continue to practice and refine your skills at home.

* Lunch!  What’s a girls day out without food and chocolate?

* Prizes and a swag bag of goodies:)

* A child model during the last hour of class to practice the new concepts you’ve learned.

* A private facebook group to stay connected and help each other learn after the class is over.

WHAT’S REQUIRED:

* a DSLR camera  (this is a digital camera that allows you to switch lenses).   Here’s a general list of popular DSLR camera’s:

nice~Canon Digital Rebel T3, Canon Digital Rebel T2i, Nikon D3000, Nikon D5100 ($500-$650 with kit lens)

nicer~Canon Digital Rebel T3i, Canon 60D , Nikon D90 ($780-$980 body only)

nicest~Canon Canon 7D, Canon 5D MarkII, Nikon D300, Nikon D7000, Nikon D700 ($1500-$2500 body only)

* Kit Lens that comes with your camera.  If you really want to step up your game, consider purchasing a 50mm 1.8 lens via Amazon for CANON or NIKON. This is not required, but I think you will really love how your pictures look when using it!  Cost is just over $100 for this type of lens.

* You must bring your manual!

* Bring a pen/notebook in case I say something earth shattering and you want to write it down;)

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The cost the workshop is $159+tax, due when you register (this is the only way to officially reserve your seat).  I am limiting the class to 10 people, so that we have time for a little one-on-one instruction.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

* Learn how to get your camera off ‘auto mode’ by understand the exposure triangle (ISO, Shutter speed, Aperture).

* Learn how to utilize natural light and turn your flash off!

* Tips on getting natural and candid photograph’s of your children.

* Understanding composition and how it effects the feel of your picture.

* You will then put your new knowledge to use with a little photo shoot!  If it’s above 25 degrees, we’ll take our camera’s outside for a bit too!

**Registration will be open after the New Year.  I will be sending out a newsletter to announce when registration is open…then it will be announced on Facebook.  Classes fill up quickly, so if you want to know first, sign up for the newsletter!  It’s on the right hand side of this blog…go see!

fine print:  The workshop fee of $159 (+ tax) is due at time of registration and is non refundable.  However, you may sell your seat to someone else if you are unable to attend.  All attendees will be required to fill out a non-compete form.

I was in an auditorium this fall cheering and taking pictures of my friend in a fitness competition and was frustrated on all the functions of the Nikon. I would love to learn what to increase/decrease in these type of situations. Would love to win this!
